SharePoint stsadm backup error 15105

I was asked to do a manual stsadm backup for a supplier that needed a copy of our environmet.  Okay so I am a little rusty with the stsadm tool and struggled a bit to get it going. So to avoid this issue again. I thought I would post it here.

First mistake I made was to just open the command prompt and run stsadm  - you should run it as administrator.  As in, right click it and Run as Administrator.

syntax for the command is

stsadm -o backup
-directory <UNC path or local drive>
-backupmethod <full or differential>
[-force]
[-item] <created path from tree>
[-percentage] <integer between 1 and 100>
[-backupthreads] <integer between 1 and 10>
[-showtree]
[-quiet]

full list here
The command I used was

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsadm -o backup -directory c:\backup - backupmethod full -force

This started off nicely but it keep givving errors - most notable was this

SqlException: Cannot open backup device 'C:\Backups\Moss\Manual\201008031220\spbr0000\000000C9.bak'. Operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105).

BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Yes - does not really tell you anything.

Long story short - to get it working all I had to do was to specify a unc -directory

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsadm -o backup -directory \\servername\sharename - backupmethod full -force

Somtimes there is a simple answer...
